Tile Decks or Tiles on Pedestals

A tile deck can be constructed in two ways, each with different benefits. They can be constructed using traditional deck building methods with aluminium bearers and joists, or simply installed directly on to pedestals. A tile deck can be used anywhere a timber deck can be as well as in areas timber is not recommended or is difficult. For example, low level rooftops over a waterproof membrane. A tile deck also offers many other benefits Including:

  • No grout used - water can travel through the joints

  • No tile cracking due to ground movement

  • Tiles can be individually lifted for under deck access - membrane inspections, plumbing or power lines, lighting etc.

  • Can be used in high BAL areas

  • Deck area can be the same as an adjoining traditionally tiled surface

  • Can be non-slip

  • Large tiles can be used.

  • Cost effective

  • Quick installation and easy replacement of any damaged tiles.

Looking at a tile completed tile deck, it is hard to know that it is a deck. They look the same as a normal tiled floor except for the lack of grout. Have a look at some of our tile deck constructions.

Tile decks have many advantages over a traditional tiled substrate or timber/composite deck. They can even be used where timber and composite can't. We have constructed hundreds of tile decks or raised tile installations on pedestals covering thousands of square metres. Tile decks have traditionally be used on commercial or multi-residential buildings, but as people realise they can now be used domestically they are being chosen more and more often. They are a cost effective alternative to timber or composite particularly in wet areas or areas with a high BAL requirement. A tile deck is a modern way of building a deck when you don't want that "deck" look.
